Men's Hockey hangs with ASU but drops first test in Tempe

St. Thomas' Cameron Recchi and Grant Loven scored goals, but host Arizona State outscored the visitors 3-0 over the final 12:13 to take a 5-2 win over the Tommies in Friday's non-conference men's hockey game in Tempe, Ariz.
Peter Thome made 44 saves for the Purple (1-8), but ASU received goals from four different players to build a 4-2 lead. The Devils (5-4) added an empty-net goal in the final 5:00.
The game was deadlocked 1-1 after two periods. Loven's power-play goal tied the game at 2-2 at 6:59 of the third period. But ASU answered 48 seconds later to take a 3-2 lead, one it wouldn't relinquish..
"We played hard in spurts again, but we're not consistent with our details," said Tommie coach Rico Blasi. "Arizona State has good speed. They have nine graduate students, they've been around the block, they know how to finish games off.
"We were disciplined for the most part, and you have to be -- they are the No. 1 power-play team in the country. The other keys we need to work on is puck management, and we needed to play good team defense, and we didn't do that -- we did it in spurts but we didn't do it consistently. We have guys that are trying to make a play that's not there. You have to see the play to make it.
"We're still searching for that identity right now. Hopefully these games that we are playing are eating away at the stomachs of these guys. Until they decide as a group that this is the way we are going to play consistently we're going to have struggles."
The teams play again Saturday (9:05 p.m. Minnesota time) in Tempe to close the weekend series.
