Men's Soccer secured another well-deserved victory at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (7-6-1) on Tuesday. It was the first non-conference and first road win for the program as a Division I team.
The Toms could not have been sharper in executing their game plan against the tough Panther team. A strong and relentless effort front to back allowed them to maintain control and bring home a 1-0 victory.
St. Thomas had a dangerous and highly successful counterattack. They brought intensity that Milwaukee was challenged to match, and it resulted in freshman Charlie Holton scoring in the 34th minute to collect the third goal of his collegiate career.
The Tommies turned the Panthers over in the midfield, then forced them wide. Junior Isaac Eckroth made a quick decision to serve the ball to Holton, who had a stellar run to the back post and launched it into the back of the net.
The attack remained strong all night and kept the Panthers honest with how many players they could keep forward. Senior Josh Grzesiak was a threatening presence on the wing and helped maintain offensive consistency and pressure for St. Thomas.
The midfield played a significant role in helping the Toms keep control of the game. As a unit, they were assertive, battled hard, and kept the Panthers frustrated. They were led by senior George Marty, who has continued to be resilient and dependable for St. Thomas.
The men had another impenetrable performance on defense, thanks to the solid play of the back line. They never let their team fall into a bad situation, stayed organized, and protected the goal from all five corners faced.
The Tommies shut everything down, forcing Milwaukee to fire haphazard shots in hopes of equalizing. Senior Halvor Houg and junior Jack Gleckler were dominant as center backs and demonstrated great composure and tough play.
In goal, senior Niklas Martensson was strong and aggressive. He made four saves for the Toms.
St. Thomas (2-11-2) finishes their season at home against conference opponent Missouri-Kansas City (3-6-3). The game is on Saturday, October 30th, at 1:00 p.m.
Head coach Jon Lowery on the game: "I'm really proud of all the guys. This is a week for us to celebrate the seniors who have been with us for four or five years. We knew it would be a challenge play a good Milwaukee team on the road midweek, but the guys came down with a great focus and maturity to execute the plan, and they did so really well. It has been a challenging season and I'm proud of them for staying in the fight and trusting the process, because we are starting to see results from that."
