Men's Hockey gets first D-I win, 5-2 over Ferris
10/23/2021 10:42:00 PM | Men's Hockey
Luke Manning scored two goals and Peter Thome stopped 29 of 31 shots to lead the St. Thomas Men's Hockey to its first Division I victory, a 5-2 home-ice defeat of Ferris State Saturday night and a split of their weekend CCHA series.
The Tommies (1-7 overall, 1-5 CCHA) also received goals from Matthew Jennings, Trevor Zins and Kyler Grundy, while Christiano Versich recorded his second, third and fourth assists of the weekend.
The Purple scored two goals in the first and two more in the second as the lead eventually reached 5-0. Zins scored a goal for the second night in a row, and finished with a three-point game and a four-point weekend. Jennings scored his first goal in a St. Thomas uniform. Junior Andrew Kangas and freshman Paul Schmid recorded their first D-I points with one assist apiece.
Thome and his teammates killed off eight of nine Ferris power-play tries.
The Bulldogs (2-4, 1-1) scored twice midway through the final period but couldn't get closer.
Tommie coach Rico Blasi said he and his staff held a short and to-the-point morning meeting with his team, and the players responded.
"We felt like we challenged them a little bit, and they responded well," Blasi said. "I can tell you it wasn't a long meeting. I think it lasted about 10 seconds. They knew exactly what they needed to do and they did it.
"We played aggressively tonight and played on our toes. We took some penalties because of that but I'd rather have us play aggressive and not back down."
Blasi said that it's good to get the first victory behind the team so they can continue to progress as a unit.
"It's always hard when you don't get results," he said. "I'm excited about practice on Monday because now we can hammer home more of our message and how we are going to play and our identity. The effort has always been there for our guys, it's not challenging them about effort at all, it's challenging them about the details and playing together as a team."
St. Thomas plays two non-conference games next weekend in Tempe, Ariz., against Arizona State.
