The Tommies played with lots of offensive intensity against conference opponent Oral Roberts. Friday's game was full of attacking opportunities for both teams, with the Golden Eagles (5-9-2) able to put two of their chances away, in the 26th and 85th minutes, to secure the victory.
St. Thomas (3-10-1) had the edge in shots with ten on target and twenty-one total. Offensively, they played swift and strong, and put continual pressure on Oral Roberts. The Purple successfully shut down the Golden Eagles' ability to get the ball out of the back. The Toms spent ample time in opponent territory and worked hard to create attacking opportunities.
One of the Tommie chances resulted in a goal in the 32nd minute. Lexi Huber sent a well-placed through ball to Abby Brantner, who put a fantastic shot in the back of the net. This was the second career assist for Huber, and the third career goal for Brantner. The two connected well throughout the contest and combined for multiple chances.
The Tommie defense played well throughout the game, standing strong against a physical Golden Eagle team that sent eight shots on goal and eighteen total. The Toms shut Oral Roberts' offensive system down, shifted formations seamlessly, and remained composed and organized throughout the match.
St. Thomas concludes its final road trip of the season on Sunday, October 24. The Toms play at the University of Missouri-Kansas City (5-12) at 1 p.m.
Head coach Sheila McGill on her team's offensive progress: "One of the things we've been talking about is creating better attacking chances to win the game. We created those opportunities today, but unfortunately the ball did not go in for us. We are definitely playing faster and stronger and are getting better at creating those chances. As we continue to do so, the goals will come."
