Despite creating more attacking chances, St. Thomas (3-11-1) fell to the University of Missouri-Kansas City (6-12).
The Toms fought tough conditions at Durwood Stadium on Sunday. A thirty-minute rain delay followed by twenty mph winds created a challenge for the Purple. They battled through this and continued to progress in attacking and applying pressure. Throughout the match, the Tommies did a great job counterattacking and generating opportunities, firing seventeen shots with ten on goal.
One of these resulted in the first regular season goal for freshman Ellie Tempero. A Roo cleared the ball to the waiting feet of Tempero, who blasted a shot from outside of the box that sailed through UMKC's defense and into the back of the net during the 47th minute.
Along with Tempero, twenty other Toms saw minutes during the game, with ten stepping in and performing well from the bench. As a team, the Tommies gained great experience in fighting and learning together.
Kansas City was able to convert two set pieces to get the victory. They scored off corners during the 18th and 80th minutes.
Head coach Sheila McGill on lessons from the game: "Although we created more opportunities, we are still learning what it takes to finish in the final third. The grit needed to accomplish this is something that will come with experience."
St. Thomas returns home for one last weekend of conference play. They face the University of North Dakota (3-11-1) on Friday, October 29th, at 3:30 p.m. The final game of their season is against North Dakota State University (2-11-1) on Sunday, October 31st, at 1:00 p.m.
