Men's Hockey falls in OT to Ferris in home opener
10/22/2021 10:42:00 PM | Men's Hockey
Ferris State held just one lead in Friday's CCHA men's hockey game against St. Thomas in Mendota Heights. It was the only lead that mattered, though, as FSU scored the game-winning overtime goal early in a 5:00 sudden-death situation.
The Bulldogs connected on a tying power-play goal 4:31 into period three that helped forced an extra session. Ferris won 1:13 into the 4-on-4 overtime on a slick shot by Liam MacDougall to claim two of the game's three points with a 2-1 win.
St. Thomas (0-6-1 overall, 0-4-1 CCHA) gets one point in the CCHA standings but was denied its first win. Tommie senior goalie Peter Thome stopped 24 shots over 61:13 in net, and Trevor Zins scored his first goal in a St. Thomas uniform and first collegiate goal, but that lead was later erased.
The Tommies were unable to capitalize on power-play chances, going 0-for-6, including being shut down on a 5:00 major pernalty in period two. Ferris was just 1-of-6 on the power play, but that goal knotted the score.
St. Thomas coach Rico Blasi noted it was a "weird" game that lacked a normal flow with so many players in the box for both teams. He said he continues to see progress by his team, though, and liked what he saw from his penalty-kill unit in what was a frustrating finish on the scoreboard.
"Overall, I thought we could have managed the puck a little better," Blasi said. "We try to take (everything) one day at time. I felt like tonight when we did have opportunities to play in our structure, we kind of broke loose a little. We had the lead for awhile, we were in situations that we had not been in before, obviously. (Ferris) had played in one (overtime), so that's another (new) experience for our team."
The teams play again Saturday night in Mendota Heights at 7 p.m. to close the weekend series.
