Men's Hockey has long night in road loss at No. 2 SCSU

St. Cloud State Men's Hockey showed three things Saturday night on home ice in a dominant 12-2 non-conference defeat of St. Thomas:
  • One: The Huskies have a lot of weapons
  • Two: If you make mistakes, they can make you pay
  • Three: Nobody in the Tommie student section needs to start up an "Overrated" chant when the teams play a Sunday night rematch at Xcel Energy Center.
The No. 2-ranked Huskies (1-0), coming off an NCAA runner-up finish last April, lived up to their preseason billing. St. Cloud State spoiled the Tommies' Division I hockey debut at the Herb Brooks National Sports Center rink on the SCSU campus.

The last time St. Thomas (0-1) played on this sheet of ice was last March in its final Division III game, a 3-3 tie with St. John's that capped a 6-1-2 season shortened by Covid protocols and restrictions. As expected, the competition on Saturday in the same arena has risen greatly as the Toms faced a St. Cloud State team at the top of D-I.

The Huskies scored seven power-play goals and two short-handed goals, capitalizing on 10 St. Thomas penalties.

Christiano Versich scored a power-play goal for the Tommies early in period two to cut the deficit to 3-1. But SCSU scored five more to make it 8-1 after two frames.

Cameron Recchi scored a goal in his first collegiate game for the Purple.

The teams play again Sunday at 5:07 p.m. at the Xcel Energy Center. Tickets are available at ticketmaster.com
