Encouraging night for Men's Hockey in 2-0 loss to No. 2-ranked Huskies

10/3/2021 8:25:00 PM | Men's Hockey

David Hrenek stopped all 12 shots he faced and No. 2-ranked St. Cloud State closed out a weekend non-conference men's hockey sweep of St. Thomas with Sunday's 2-0 win before an announced crowd of 4,261 at Xcel Energy Center.

Zach Okabe scored a first-period power-play goal for SCSU (2-0). Micah Miller scored late in period two for what proved to be the game's final goal.

St. Thomas (0-2), closing out its first weekend series of its inaugural Division I season, showed dramatic improvement over Saturday's night battle when the Huskies stormed to a 12-2 win, capitalizing on 10 Tommie penalties and converting 7-of-10 power-play tries.

On Sunday, Tommie goalie Peter Thome recorded 34 saves and the defense killed off SCSU's final two power-play tries. The Huskies' defense in turn made it difficult for St. Thomas to get shots on the net.

St. Thomas coach Rico Blasi said his team showed growth and improvement this weekend, despite the two different outcomes. "St. Cloud State is just really, really good," Blasi said. "They're ranked No. 2, but I think they should be ranked No. 1."

The Tommies travel to Northern Michigan for its first CCHA games next Friday and Saturday in Houghton, Mich.
