Men's Hockey drops CCHA opener on the road

Michael Colella scored two goals and a late empty-net score helped Northern Michigan spoil St. Thomas' CCHA men's hockey debut of St. Thomas with a 4-1 win Friday night in Marquette, Mich.
Luke Manning scored a second-period power-play goal for the Tommies (0-3 overall, 0-1 CCHA) to cut the deficit to 2-1. But the Toms couldn't find the back of the net again as the hosts recorded a 35-22 advantage in shots on goal in the contest.
Peter Thome stopped 28 of 31 shots in goal for St. Thomas, and the Purple killed off all four Northern power-play tries.
It was the first hockey matchup ever between St. Thomas and Northern Michigan.
The teams play again Saturday at 5 p.m. Minnesota time on the NMU ice.
