St. Thomas strikes first, but three unanswered goals by Lake Superior State propels the Lakers to 3-1 win

Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. – Despite outshooting Lake Superior State 30-25, St. Thomas could not overcome two power play goals by the Lakers as the Tommies fall to the Lakers 3-1.
"We're 1-1 going into the third period, we got to learn how to learn to win games," said Head Coach Rico Blasi. "Those are things that we got to keep working on and focus on our process. Stick with the process and trust the process."
The Tommies struck first as freshman Blaine Warnert tallied his first collegiate points off his first collegiate goal to give the Tommies a 1-0 lead after 16 scoreless minutes of St. Thomas' first game against Lake Superior State on Friday night. Warnert's goal was assisted by junior Trevor Zins and freshman Cameron Recchi.
The Lakers evened the score at 1-1 heading into the first intermission on their first power play goal of the evening with under two minutes to play in the first period.
Neither team found the back of the net in the second period and entered the third period knotted up at 1-1.
Lake Superior State broke the tie with six seconds to go on their third power play of the night, giving the Lakers their first lead of the game 4:11 into the final period. With just under two minutes to play, St. Thomas pulled senior goaltender Jacob Berger, opening the door for an open-net goal for the Lakers.
St. Thomas returns to action in game two of the series at Lake Superior State with a puck drop slated for 6:07 p.m. CT on Saturday.
