Women's Soccer uses challenge of an experienced South Dakota team to adapt and improve

10/1/2021 10:02:00 PM | Women's Soccer

The Tommies knew that facing an experienced and undefeated and home South Dakota team would be a challenge, and they came in ready to battle in their Summit League opener Friday night in Vermillion.

The Coyotes (6-1-2) were lifted by a hat-trick performance by senior Tiannah Moore, and a penalty kick goal from fifth year Alexis Mitchell. They had fourteen shots with eight on target, and goalie Emma Harkleroad had five saves for South Dakota. The senior-heavy squad won 4-0.

St. Thomas took the challenge of the new experience and used the opportunity to grow on the field. Head coach Sheila McGill said, "We went into battle knowing they are a great opponent, and we were ready to learn what the Summit League had in store for us. They played a different formation than what we have seen. Our team was challenged to figure it out as the game went on and we did. We had to adjust to a new formation of our own and move some players to different positions. With this, we came out fired up in the second half and looked dangerous, putting more shots on frame and being persistent in play."

The Toms had nine shots with five on goal, and sophomore Olivia Graupmann had four saves for St. Thomas. Twenty-two players saw time, giving great experience and opportunity to learn to a younger group of athletes. Senior Alex Balfour was able to return this game, bringing intensity and composure to the Tommie line-up. Freshman Marli Bertagnoli and Lissa Mizutani stepped into new positions and were able to adapt and settle into their roles this game.

The Tommies kept making adjustments throughout the game, and never diminished in intensity. They continued to keep the Coyotes flustered and used every opportunity to learn and move forward.

This was the first conference match for the women as member of the Summit League. St. Thomas (2-6-1) finishes out their road trip on Sunday at 1 p.m. at South Dakota State (10-1), before returning home next weekend to face two more Summit opponents.
