Comebacks rule the day as Softball starts 2-0 in Arizona

No. 14-ranked St. Thomas Softball used impressive comebacks to secure a pair of victories Friday In the NFCA Leadoff Classic tourney in Tucson, Ariz.

The Toms rallied from 7-0 down in the third inning to post a 10-8 win over LeTourneau, then erased a 5-2 deficit in a 9-6 win over George Fox.

Elise Barnes and Sam Birling each slapped two-run doubles to highlight an eight-run third inning that put St. Thomas ahead to stay. Alyssa Erdman's RBI ground out and Coryn Jacobson's RBI single scored two insurance runs in the sixth inning for a 10-7 lead. Annie Naughton had thtree hots in the opener and two more in game two.

Kendall Hopkins pitched five innings and allowed one earned run with eight strikeouts to get the victory in relief. Megan Baniecke got the last four outs and fanned two to record the save.

St. Thomas broke a 6-6 tie against George Fox with three runs in the top of the seventh inning. A walk and RBI singles by Hayley Dunning and Bridget Armstrong and Naughton's RBI ground out plated the pivotal runs. Dunning pitched four-plus innings in relief to get the victory.

The Purple (3-1) have come back from deficits of three or more runs in all three victories thus far in the 2020 season.

They play two more games on Saturday and two on Sunday to close out the trip.
