Sat. Wrap: Soccer teams cruise; WCC starts well

Six Tommie teams were in action Saturday, including a pair of shutout wins in soccer and a strong debut race for Women's Cross Country.
Men's Soccer
Sophomore Josh Grzesiak, a Chicago native, scored his first two college goals in a homecoming weekend as No. 6-ranked St. Thomas Men's Soccer opened a two-game road swing to Chicagoland with Saturday's 4-0 win over host Lake Forest (Ill.) in non-conference play.
The Tommies (3-0) play at North Central (Ill.) on Sunday afternoon.
A first-half goal by sophomore Halvor Houg -- his first collegiate goal -- put St. Thomas ahead to stay. The Toms added three goals in a 4:00 span early in the second half with one by Lucas Horton and two by Grzesiak.
UST outshot the Foresters 7-0 in shots on goal. Will Kidd added two assists.
Women's Cross Country
Freshman Olivia Moll placed fifth and led eight Tommie runners in the top 20 to lead the No. 19-ranked Tommie women's cross country team to second place out of eight teams Saturday at the Luther Invite in Decorah, Iowa. It was the first race of the 2018 season for the Toms, who held out a couple of veteran runners..
Moll clocked 19:15 for the 5,000-meter course. Senior Amber Matzoll placed eighth. Sophomore Martha Hubbell took 11th in her first race as a Tommie. Juniors Molly Clarke and Becca Wilkin and sophomore Carly Scheuerman also had top-16 finishes.
Iowa Central Community College took first with 19 points. UST (51), Loras (84) and Luther (116) were the first three Division III team finishers.
Women's Soccer
St. Thomas (3-1) ran its win streak to three with Saturday's 7-0 defeat of Northland College.
The Toms play again Sunday (3 p.m.) at nationally-ranked UW-La Crosse.
Eleven different Toms had a goal or an assist, and Sarah Pasternak played in goal with the shutout. Gaba Palazzo and Kate Heimer each chipped in a goal and an assist. Kaley Roberts. Mari Ferrer, Sarah Hoffman, Kristen Epperly and McKenna Peplinski all scored one goal.
Volleyball
St. Thomas (5-3) went 1-1 Saturday at the Augsburg Invitational with a 3-1 win over Cornell (Iowa) and a 3-1 loss to UW-Eau Claire.
The Toms held off the Rams 25-9, 19-25, 25-21, 25-21, but lost to the Blugolds 25-20, 20-25, 25-10, 25-22.
Against Cornell, freshman Fran Egan had 10 kills; Grace Bordson had 11 kills and six assists; Hannah Schwartz had 21 assists and 17 digs; Katharine Mallak had nine kills and 16 digs; Madie Kroehler had nine kills and 16 digs; Ellie Meyer added four aces.
Against Eau Claire, Bordson had nine kills and four blocks; Mallak had 21 assists, seven digs and two aces; and Kroehler had nine kills.
The Toms open their home season Wednesday against Concordia-Moorhead.
Men's Golf
Just three shots separate four teams atop the team leaderboard at the St. Thomas Invitational men's golf tourney after the opening 18 holes on Saturday. Sunday's final day will have 36 holes of play.
St. John's No. 2 team and Gustavus share the lead after each shooting 298. Augsburg is one back at 299. St. Thomas shot 301.
St. John's No. 1 team recorded a 312 score; Bethel carded a 313; St. Thomas' B and C teams shot 316 and 318.
Emmet Herb shot 71 and is tied for fourth out of 82 players. Peder Larson had a 73. Matt Mellin (76), Miles McCarthy (81) and Ben Kisla (82) rounded out the Toms' first team.
Other Tommie players with good scores were Eric Chambers (73) and Dylan Chouinard (75).

Women's Golf
Sydney Steinmetz shot 84 and is tied for fifth and Courtney Shorter recorded an 85 and is tied for 10th to lead Tommie Women's Golf to third place at the halfway point of the seven-team Cobber Invitational in Detroit Lakes. The final 18 holes will be played Sunday.
UST's Erin Kehoe shot 89; Joleen Werden shot 90; and Kate Balison shot 93.
St. Ben's (335), St. Catherine (339), UST (352) and Macalester (366) haold the top four team spots.
