Men's soccer victorious on Senior Day

10/21/2017 12:00:00 AM | Men's Soccer

ST. PAUL - It was fitting that a senior (Connor Young) scored in the 65th minute of men's soccer's Senior Day contest, which proved to be a 1-0 win for the Tommies on Saturday afternoon at South Field.

Fellow senior Shae Bottum assisted on the goal and lifted the Purple to a 15-1-0 overall record and 8-0-0 mark in MIAC play.  Saturday's win is also UST's 12th in a row.  St. Olaf drops to 3-12-1 overall and 2-6-1 in league competition.

A scoreless first half saw the Oles hold a 4-3 shot advantage as each team put one shot on net.  However, the Tommies came out aggressive in the second half to flex an 11-2 edge in shots, including four on net.

Senior Connor Young scored the game's lone goal at the 64:57 mark with an assist from fellow senior Shae Bottum.  The goal was Young's second of the season and was all the Tommies would need for the afternoon in the 1-0 win.

Saturday's shutout is the eighth of the season, all of which are recorded by junior goalkeeper Aidan Hogan, who made two saves in the win.  Ben Westermeyer suffered the loss in a four-save effort for the Oles.

St. Thomas finished the afternoon with a 14-6 shot advantage, including a 5-2 edge on goal.  The Tommies were also plus-five in corner kicks (7-2).

St. Thomas will be back in action again on Tuesday when it hosts Augsburg at 3:30 pm.

Senior Day

On Saturday, the St. Thomas Athletic Department honored 10 seniors who have dedicated themselves to the men's soccer program over the past four years.  Together, this group has amassed a record of 55-18-6, including a 23-9-5 MIAC mark.  This group has also earned back-to-back MIAC Playoff appearances, including an MIAC regular season and postseason championship last year.  In addition, the Tommies advanced to the NCAA Semifinal for the first time in program history last season.
