Men's soccer stays unbeaten with dramatic 2OT win

ROSEVILLE, Minn. – Playing its fourth game in six days, the St. Thomas men's soccer team needed a pair of overtimes on Wednesday night to remain unbeaten in the young 2016 season.

The Tommies traveled to nearby Northwestern University to play nearly 106 minutes in a thrilling 3-2 victory thanks to a game-winning goal from junior Josh Boris.  With the win, St. Thomas improves to 3-0-1 on the year, while the Eagles drop to 0-2-1 with the loss.

Northwestern got on the scoreboard first when Matthew McCann scored unassisted in the 35th minute to give his team the early 1-0 lead.  McCann's second goal of the season stood as the lone goal in the first half, as the Eagles took the lead into halftime.

But the Tommies got it rolling in the second half.  Junior Alex Schnobrich continued his hot start to the season, scoring his second goal of the year in the 67th minute.  Schnobrich tied the game 1-1 off an assist from Connor Young, his first of the year.

St. Thomas appeared to put the game away in the 84th minute when Shae Bottum scored his second of the year to put the Purple on top 2-1, but Northwestern had other ideas.

With just 1:03 remaining in regulation, the Eagles tied the game 2-2 when Derrick Aminga received an assist from Josiah Donat to score his first goal of the season.  The goal swung the momentum back to the home bench as the two teams went to overtime.

In the first overtime, each team threw one shot on net, but neither stuck, as they went to ta second overtime, where again the two teams were even in the shots category.  However, this time the Tommies found the back of the net at the 105:43 mark.

Josh Boris sent a pass into the center, Schnobrich pushed the ball to Pierce Erickson, who converted to give St. Thomas the 3-2 victory. The goal was Erickson's first of the season and 14th of his career.

The Tommies outshot the Eagles 21-10 on the evening, including an 11-2 advantage in the second half.  UST also put 14 shots on net to just seven for UNW.

In goal, Grant Larson recorded the win, logging every minute between the posts and making five saves.  For Northwestern, Turner Main suffered his second loss of the year in a 10-save effort.

The grueling stretch to open the season continues for the Tommie men on Saturday, when they host North Central (Ill.) at South Field for a 1:00 pm kickoff.  That game will serve as the end of a stretch of five games in eight days to open the season and the final non-conference tune up before entering the conference schedule.
