Softball gets back on track with sweep over Carleton

ST. PAUL – The St. Thomas softball team got back on track after being swept on Tuesday with a sweep of its own on Thursday afternoon at South Field. The Tommies defeated Carleton by the score of 8-0 in five innings in the first game before winning 8-1 in game two.
Katie Jo Delisle led the way offensively for UST with five RBI on the night, while she and Kendra Bowe picked up wins in the pitching circle. With today's sweep, St. Thomas improves to 27-7 overall and 11-5 in the MIAC, while Carleton falls to 8-22 overall and 1-9 in league play.
Game 1 – St. Thomas 8, Carleton 0
After a scoreless first inning, the Tommies used a five-run second inning to crack open a lead they would not look back upon. All five runs in the inning were unearned, as St. Thomas took advantage of a pair of back-to-back errors to push the first runs of the game across the plate.
Kendra Bowe led off the inning with a single to right before Danielle Wigen and Micaela Trainor both reached first on throwing errors, the second of which brought Bowe and Wigen in to score. McKenzie Wergin and Katie Jo Delisle each delivered RBI singles and the damage was done.
UST put together three more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and held the Knights scoreless once again in the top of the fifth to cut the game short due to the eight-run rule.
The three-run fourth started with a lead-off double from Wergin. In the next at-bat, Megan Dupuis brought her around to score with an RBI single to left. Delisle smoked an RBI triple to right and Annie Boyer added a run-scoring single to center to round out the inning's scoring.
Three St. Thomas players recorded multiple hits in the contest, led by Wergin, who was a perfect 3-for-3 in the ball game with an RBI and two runs scored. Dupuis and Delisle both notched 2-for-3 days, as Delisle put up a pair of RBI.
In the circle, Kendra Bowe went all five innings without giving up a run on five hits to capture her 15th win of the year. Her counterpart, Keelin Davis, allowed nine hits and all eight runs in the loss, although just three were earned.
Game 2 – St. Thomas 8, Carleton 1
The Tommies wasted little time getting on the scoreboard in game two. After holding the Knights scoreless in the top of the first inning, UST put up three runs on the scoreboard, and followed them with another run in the bottom of the second to open up an early 4-0 lead.
After a single and a hit-by-pitch put runners on first and second, pitcher Katie Jo Delisle helped herself with a three-run home run to left center in the first before Bianca Peterson manufactured another run in the bottom of the second with a sacrifice fly push the lead to 4-0.
Again, the Tommies would not look back on the way to an 8-1 win to complete the sweep, as they would score two more runs in each the bottom of the fourth and fifth. St. Thomas allowed the only Carleton run of the day in the top of the fifth inning on a solo home run from Cassie Clarke.
UST tallied 12 hits in the second game to Carleton's four. Delisle led the way once again with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate and three RBI. Wergin, Dupuis, Bowe, and Megan Bush all had multiple hits in the game as well, combining for 10 of the 12 hits in the game.
Delisle also worked four and two-thirds innings on the rubber to earn the win and move to 5-3 on the year. She allowed one run on four hits and struck out four, while Carleton pitcher Maddie Freyberg went all six innings in the losing effort.
St. Thomas will make the short trip to St. Catherine University on Saturday afternoon for another MIAC doubleheader, set to begin at 1:00 pm.
