MOORHEAD, Minn. – The St. Thomas women's basketball team held Concordia College to 28.3-percent (15-53) shooting from the field in a 52-47 win on Wednesday night at Nemzek Fieldhouse.   The Tommies also won the rebound (38-36) and turnover (11-15) battle to pull out the hard-fought win.

Junior Kaitlin Langer led the way for the Tommie women, scoring 13 points and pulling down seven rebounds.  Seniors Katie Stone and Mykenzie Spaulding, along with junior Gabby Zehrer each contributed 12 points.

With the win, St. Thomas improves to 6-0 overall and 1-0 in the MIAC, while the Cobbers drop to 3-3 overall and open the MIAC schedule 0-1.  It is the 26th consecutive win against conference opponents, a streak that stretches over the last three seasons.  The last team to beat St. Thomas: Concordia, in February of 2014.

The Tommies held a 13-10 lead after one quarter of play, thanks in large part to a string of eight straight points from Mykenzie Spaulding off the bench.  Spaulding was the bright spot for St. Thomas in the opening frame, connecting on four of her five field goal attempts.  The rest of the team went 2-for-8.

St. Thomas' lead more than doubled in the second quarter, as the Tommie women took a 26-19 lead in to halftime. After the second straight first half that saw St. Thomas score less than 30 points, the offense picked up in the third quarter.

The Tommies came out to score 17 points in the quarter, while the Cobbers matched their first half total of 19.  Concordia shot 45.5-percent (5-11) and was a perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line to cut the St. Thomas lead to 43-38 after three complete.

However, the offense would not last, as each team scored just nine points in the final frame to seal the final score of 52-47.

For the game, St. Thomas shot 38.2-percent (21-55) from the field and 87.5-percent (7-8) from the line.  The Tommies also held Concordia to a season-best 28.3-percent (15-53) from the floor, but the Cobbers held the advantage at the charity stripe, connecting at a 92.3-percent (12-13) clip.

Langer's team-high 13 points all came in the second half after seeing limited minutes due to two quick fouls in the first quarter.  Sophomore Lauren Fischer grabbed a game-high eight rebounds and senior Paige Gernes led all players with five assists.

For Concordia, Greta Walsh scored a game-high 22 points on 8-of-21 shooting.  Jenna Januschka and Hannah Jeske each pulled down seven boards.

St. Thomas will be back in action on Saturday night when it hosts Carleton College at 8:00 pm.
