NORTHFIELD, Minn. – After winning the first two MIAC Playoff wins in program history on Tuesday and Wednesday, the sixth-seeded St. Thomas men's soccer team's Cinderella bid fell short on Saturday afternoon at Rolf Melby Field. The Tommies fell to fourth-seeded St. Olaf 2-0 in the MIAC Playoff Championship game.
St. Thomas allowed a goal in each half in the loss, which capped the season with a record of 12-7-1. St. Olaf improves to 13-7-1 and receives the MIAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Tournament.
The Oles got on the board midway through the first half when Aaron Stets put a header away on a cross from Aaron Miller. The goal gave St. Olaf a 1-0 lead, which the Oles held through the remainder of the first half in to halftime.
Jens Undlin added an insurance goal in the 68th minute on a breakaway that sealed the win for the Oles, who would never look back on the way to the win.
After an 11-6 shot advantage in the first half for St. Olaf, St. Thomas came back to swing the shots in its favor with an 8-2 count in the second half for a game total of 14-13. The two teams were also even in shots on goal with seven apiece, as well as corner kicks with four each.
Junior goalkeeper Grant Larson recorded five saves in the loss for the Tommies and drops to 8-4-1 as the goalie of record. Ben Braman improves to 8-6-0 after making seven saves in the shutout.
