Baago's hat trick leads WHKY to 7-1 win

MENDOTA HEIGHTS, Minn. – Senior Tarra Baago turned in a night to remember, scoring three goals and adding two assists for good measure on Friday night at St. Thomas Ice Arena.  Baago's hat trick lead the St. Thomas women's hockey team to a 7-1 win over Hamline University to improve to 7-6-2 overall and 6-1-2 in the MIAC.

Freshman Heidi Winiecki got the busy scoring night started when she found the back of the net at 12:31 of the first period.  Winiecki's seventh goal of the year gave the Tommies a 1-0 lead and came with assists from Baago and Courtney Umland.

Baago added to the lead in the final minute of the opening period.  The senior took advantage of a power play chance and buried her seventh goal of the season to give her team a 2-0 lead headed to the first intermission.  Umland and Megan Juricko recorded assists on the goal.

After outshooting Hamline 17-5 in the first period, St. Thomas continued its barrage of shots in the second period.  The Tommies outshot the Pipers 22-6 in the frame, which led to four more goals for UST.  Megan Juricko started things off with her second goal of the season just 2:57 into the period before Hamline answered with a goal just a minute and a half later.

However, it was all Tommies from there, as they went on to score three more goals in the second period.  Rachel Friberg, Baago, and Winiecki each added to the lead with back-to-back-to-back goals at 9:10, 10:17, and 10:35, respectively.

Baago capped off the scoring 5:23 into the third period.  The goal completed the hat trick and put the exclamation point on an offensive outburst by the Tommies, who skated the rest of the way to the 7-1 victory.

Baago's five points tonight gave her 21 (9G, 12A) for the season, which is tops in the MIAC.  A four-point night for Courtney Umland 18 (5G, 13A) points for the year to rank third among league players and Heidi Winiecki now has 15 points (7G, 8A) after a three-point outing to rank fifth.

Tommie goaltender Taylor Neisen allowed just one goal and made 17 saves in the win as UST outshot the Pipers 46-18 on the night.

The two teams will be back in action again tomorrow night when they square off at Oscar Johnson Arena for a 7:00 p.m., opening faceoff.
