Men's Soccer falls 4-1 to Wartburg

9/20/2014 12:00:00 AM | Men's Soccer

The St. Thomas men's soccer team suffered a 4-1 setback to Wartburg College on Saturday afternoon in Kenosha, Wis.  The Tommies, who entered the game ranked No. 9 in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Division III national poll, snapped a four-game winning streak and drop to 5-2-0 overall, while the Knights improve to 5-2-1.

Wartburg jumped out to the early lead in the 10th minute when Zubeen Azari scored on an assist from Dan Nadeau.  The goal gave the Knights a 1-0 lead and the momentum in the early going.

Zach Smith added to the lead in the 39th minute.  Smith scored unassisted at the 38:17 mark to give his team a 2-0 lead.  The goal would later be tabbed as the game-winner.

The Tommies gained a bit of momentum back just before the half when rookie Pierce Erickson scored his fourth goal of the year in the 41st minute.  Erickson brought the score to 2-1 heading into the intermission.

Wartburg extended its lead in the 54th minute when Dan Nadeau turned from facilitator to scorer with his sixth goal of the season to put his team in front 3-1.

The final exclamation point came in the 86th minute thanks to Jay Tegge.  Tegge scored unassisted to put the finishing touch on a 4-1 victory.  The game was called just moments later due to the threat of lightning in the area.

The Knights finished the game with a shot advantage of 17-6 and 7-5 in corner kicks.

Tommie goalkeeper Mitchell Wolff registered six saves in the loss, while his counterpart Donald Ticknor made just one save.

St. Thomas will take to the turf again tomorrow afternoon against the host Carthage College at 5:00 p.m.
