9/13/2014 12:00:00 AM | Men's Soccer

The St. Thomas men's soccer team scored in the 61st minute to grind out a 1-0 win over UW-Superior on Saturday afternoon in Superior, Wis.

With the win, the Tommies improve to 4-1-0 on the year, while the Yellowjackets drop to 3-1-0.  UST will open MIAC play on Wednesday afternoon when it hosts Macalester at 4:00 p.m., at South Field.

After a scoreless first half, the Tommies dug in to get on the scoreboard at 60:22.  Kevin Van Lieshout received an assist from Mark Heydt to score his first collegiate goal and put his team on top 1-0.

From there, the Toms held UW-Suprior scoreless for the remaining 29-plus minutes to hang on for the shutout win.

St. Thomas outshot the Yellowjackets 13-10 in a game that saw a total of 23 fouls, five yellow cards, and one red card.

"It was ugly, but we will take it," stated Head Coach Jon Lowery.  "We didn't play well, but still had the guts to grind out the win."

St. Thomas will open conference play on Wednesday against Macalester.  That game will take place at St. Thomas's South Field at 4 p.m.
