The St. Thomas women's soccer team got its first win of the season on Saturday afternoon. The Tommies defeated UW-Stevens Point 2-0 at Community Stadium in Stevens Point, Wis. St. Thomas evens its record at 1-1-0, while UW-Stevens Point drops to 0-2-0.
One day after a defensive battle that saw the Tommies fall 1-0 to UW-Oshkosh, St. Thomas found itself in another battle throughout the first half of Saturday's contest. The Tommie women recorded six shots in the first 45 minutes, but could not put one home and the two teams went to the intermission in a scoreless tie.
The second half began much like the first. St. Thomas peppered Pointer goalie Kristen Churkey, who gave way in the 75th minute when freshman Brielle Bierman scored her first collegiate goal. Bierman took the ball down the center of the field and finished past a rushing Churkey to give her team the late 1-0 lead.
Senior Morgan McConachie sealed the win with a goal in the final minute of the game. McConachie poked one past the UW-Stevens Point goalkeeper to give the Tommies the final insurance score and secure the 2-0 win.
St. Thomas finished the afternoon with an impressive 19-2 advantage in shots, including a 13-2 mark in the second half. Similarly, the Tommies held a 10-2 advantage in shots on goal.
Sophomore goalkeeper Tarynn Theilig needed to make just two saves in the win, while her counterpart Kristen Churkey made eight saves in a losing effort.
The Tommies will be back on the field next Friday, Sept. 5th when they head to Tacoma, Wash., to take on the University of Puget Sound. That kick off is set for 5:30 p.m.
