Men's Soccer Caps Exhibition Season With Win

The St. Thomas men's soccer team concluded its preseason exhibition schedule on Sunday night at South Field. After a 45-minute lightning delay, the Tommies came away with a 3-1 win over Fire SC of the Minnesota Amateur Soccer League, comprised of former college players.
Fire SC struck first as Tommie alum Joe Voeller found space amid the UST defense and slotted home the opening goal midway through the first half. Voeller was a two-time First Team All-MIAC selection and twice named offensive player of the year for the Tommies in 2006 and 2007.
Freshman Connor Young answered just before halftime with a goal to level the match heading into the intermission.
The second half was controlled by St. Thomas. Freshman Shae Bottum scored on a blast from 25-feet out to make the score 2-1. Miles Stockman-Willis followed suit when he finished off a clever pass from Matt Bouche to cap the scoring and give the Tommies the favorable 3-1 result.
"Fire SC was a great game for us with many former college players who collectively are a very good team," mentioned Head Coach Jon Lowery. "Our defensive shape was tested and is improving as we move forward. We also saw signs in the attack of being very dangerous and started to get our movements right in transition."
"We have a ways to go, but it was a good evening for our development and certainly helps with our remaining preseason as we move forward," Lowery finished. "All 30 players who played made a contribution and we now have time to refine and develop how we want to look on opening weekend."
St. Thomas will open the regular season on Friday, August 29th when it hosts the Milwaukee School of Engineering. That kickoff is set for 5:00 p.m., at South Field.
