Women's soccer settles for scoreless tie on Senior Day

ST. PAUL – The St. Thomas women's soccer team settled for a scoreless tie with Carleton College in double overtime on Senior Day Wednesday afternoon at South Field.  The Tommies move to 8-6-3 overall and 6-3-1 in the MIAC, while Carleton is now 6-1-3 in league play.

Although the Knights recorded a shot advantage of 6-4 and controlled possession for a good portion of the first half, the Tommie women held a 2-1 edge in shots on goal.  St. Thomas created multiple chances, the best of which came on a run from freshman Brielle Bierman.

In the 36th minute, Bierman got behind the Carleton defense and avoided a rushing Carleton goalkeeper to create an open net chance.  However, the freshman was forced to rush the shot to keep the angle and missed just wide.

The second half saw Carleton gain a 6-2 advantage in shots, including a 4-1 mark in shots on target.  However, the Knights could still not put one past sophomore goalkeeper Tarynn Theilig.

St. Thomas' best scoring opportunity again came from Bierman.  Brielle controlled the ball on another run, beating the Carleton defender.  Bierman got a shot off, but could not quite get it up in the air quick enough, as a charging Knight keeper just got a hand on the attempt, deflecting it wide.

Neither team was able to get much going in the first overtime, as there was just one shot on goal in the 10-minute period.

The second overtime yielded a number of scoring chances in rapid succession for the Knights.  In the 104th minute, Carleton's Megan King started things off with a shot from the left side that was deflected away by Theilig.  Bailey Ulbricht picked up the rebound and went right to work, putting another drive on net, but Theilig came up with a huge save diving to her left to keep the tie intact.

After the near game-ending shots, the Tommies were content settling for the tie and earning a key point in the MIAC standings.

For the game, Carleton finished with a shot advantage of 17-8, including an 8-3 edge in shots on goal.  The Knights also recorded seven corner kicks to just two for St. Thomas.

St. Thomas keeper Tarynn Theilig was big in the tie, making eight saves and now moves to 8-6-3 on the year.  Her counterpart, Mikayla Coulombe, registered three saves and is now 9-4-3 this season.

UST will be back in action on Saturday night when it travels across town to take on conference-leader Augsburg.  That game is set for a 7:00 p.m., start and could have playoff implications for the Tommies.  Depending on the Macalester result tonight, St. Thomas may need a tie or win on Saturday night in Minneapolis.

Wednesday was also Senior Day for the St. Thomas women's soccer team.  The University of St. Thomas and its athletic department would like to thank five seniors for their hard work and dedication to the women's soccer program throughout their careers.  Those five seniors are Nicole Lenz, Morgan McConachie, Taylor Sabrowski, Kelsie Sargent, and Kate Steuer.
