Sophomore Kendra Bowe threw six shutout innings in relief to get two wins for No. 16-ranked Tommie softball team Saturday on day one of its spring trip to Clermont, Fla.
The Tommies (10-2) used late-inning rallies to take a 2-1 win over Carroll (Wis.) and 5-1 victory over the University of Chicago. Three Tommie pitchers allowed just four hits on the day.
Kimmy Hassell's RBI single in the bottom of the fifth scored the go-ahead run against Carroll, a 22-win, conference runner-up team last season. The hit scored Jenna Hoffman, who doubled. Freshman Morgan Murphy pitched the first four innings and combined with Bowe on a two-hitter. UST made the most of four hits in its six at-bats.
Chicago, 26-11 and an NCAA playoff qualifier last season, was tied 1-1 through six innings but the Toms erupted for four runs in the top of the seventh. Hoffman's two-run bases-loaded double, Erin Mussett's RBI ground out and Emily Gregory's RBI single keyed the outburst. Sophomore Breezy Bannon worked the first four innings and combined with Bowe on a two-hitter.
St. Thomas is scheduled to play Union (N.Y.) on Sunday and MIT and Concordia-Wisconsin on Tuesday.
