Tommies earn second win over crosstown Gophers in as many seasons
SAINT PAUL, Minn. – St. Thomas softball (24-10) used an early offensive surge and a dominant all-around performance from Ella Cook to defeat Minnesota Golden Gopher softball, 7-2, Wednesday afternoon at South Field.
The Tommies racked up 13 hits and drew two walks in the win over their crosstown rivals, securing their second victory over Minnesota in the past two seasons.
Cook set the tone early, tossing a scoreless first inning before driving in the game's opening run with a sacrifice fly. Avery Wukawitz led off the bottom half with a single, then stole both second and third before scoring on the Cook fly ball.
In the circle, Cook delivered a complete-game effort, allowing no earned runs across 7.0 innings. She surrendered just six hits, struck out five, and walked three while improving her record with her ninth win of the season. Both runs allowed were unearned, as she lowered her Summit League-leading ERA to. 1.57. At the plate, Cook went 3-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored.
After Minnesota pushed across a run in the top of the third, St. Thomas responded immediately. Wukawitz sparked the rally with a lead off triple and scored on an RBI single from Laken Lienhard. Cook followed with her eighth home run of the season to extend the lead, 3-1.
The Tommies added insurance in the fifth and sixth innings. Wukawitz doubled to open the fifth and later scored on another Lienhard single. In the sixth, Grace Nosan reached to start the inning, and Lienhard delivered again with a two-out RBI, her third run batted in of the game, before coming home on a Cook double. Earlier in the fifth, Abbi Stierlen contributed a sacrifice fly to score Cassidy Carby.
Minnesota threatened in the seventh, scoring once and loading the bases, but Cook closed the door by inducing a fly out to Morgan Klein in right field to end the game.
