The Tommies claim a 9-0 run-rule win in game one before falling 6-3 in game two
SAINT PAUL, Minn. – St. Thomas softball (22-10, 4-1) split its home-opening doubleheader with South Dakota (9-24-1, 2-3) Saturday afternoon at South Field. The Tommies cruised to a 9-0, five-inning victory in game one behind a dominant outing from Ella Cook, but dropped game two, 6-3.
Game One
St. Thomas wasted no time jumping out in front, plating three runs in the first inning. Avery Wukawitz led off with a walk and later scored on a Laken Lienhard double to center. Ella Cook followed with an RBI single to bring home Lienhard, and Cassidy Carby scored on an Abbi Stierlen base hit to make it 3-0.
Cook handled the rest in the circle, tossing a complete-game shutout over five innings. She allowed just two hits and three walks while striking out five, keeping South Dakota off balance throughout.
The Tommies added to their lead in the second when Kameron Monson delivered a two-run single, scoring Carby and Lienhard to push the margin to 5-0. In the fourth, Monson added a sacrifice fly, Morgan Klein reached on an error that allowed Cook to score, and Zoe Trotter capped the inning with a two-run single to extend the lead to 9-0.
Cook worked around a leadoff single in the fifth, stranding two runners and closing out the run-rule victory.
Carby led the offense with a multi-hit effort, adding a double, a walk, and two runs scored. The Tommies showed patience at the plate with eight walks, including two from Stierlen.
Game Two
South Dakota responded quickly in game two, scoring two runs in the first inning off starter Ava Kleinfeldt and adding two more in the second. An unearned run in the third extended the Coyotes' lead and ended Kleinfeldt's outing after 2.1 innings.
Cook entered in relief and provided stability, allowing just one run over 4.2 innings.
Offensively, St. Thomas struggled to generate momentum. Morgan Klein drove in Miley Wichman with an RBI single in the second, and Laken Lienhard added a two-run home run in the fifth to account for the Tommies' scoring.
Klein finished with two hits and an RBI, while Wukawitz drew two walks and added a stolen base. St. Thomas worked six walks in the game but couldn't overcome the early deficit.
