4/30/2012 12:00:00 AM | Softball
Freshman RHP Kendra Bowe allowed one run over 10 2-3 innings on the day to get two pitching wins and Emily Gregory and Genny Duffy slugged home runs to lead No. 16-ranked St. Thomas to an 8-0, 4-1 softball sweep of St. Ben's in Monday action at UST's South Field.
Kimmy Hassel went 4-for-5 with a walk on the day for St. Thomas (34-6 overall, 21-1 MIAC), which secured the outright MIAC championship and the top seed for next weekend's playoffs. Hassel raised her season average to .496 and now has 68 hits in 40 games.
UST has won 11 of the last 13 conference championships. The Toms ran their home-field win streak to 29.
In the opener, Gregory slapped her 17th career home run, a three-run blast to give UST a 4-0 lead.
UST took a 2-0 lead in game two on Tisa Phinney's two-run double. After a Blazer solo homer cut the lead to one, Duffy's pinch-hit two-run homer pushed the lead to 4-1.
Phinney extended her hitting streak to 15 games with hits in each game.
Bowe improved to 19-0 on the season as he struck out 14 and walked only two over the two games.
The Tommies will start play Friday in day one of the double-elimination MIAC playoffs against the fourth seed, either St. Mary's or Augsburg.
