Softball has 2-0 day to reach playoff title game

Top-seed St. Thomas posted two Friday wins in day one of the 2012 MIAC Softball playoffs in Shoreview and pushed their season win streak to 12.
The No. 14-ranked Tommies held off fourth-seed St. Mary's, 8-7, and blanked second-seed Gustavus, 9-0 in five innings. Freshman RHP Kendra Bowe climbed to 21-0 on the season as she took both mound wins with 10 innings of work and no earned runs with six Ks, three walks and seven hits allowed.
St. Thomas (36-6) will play Saturday in the 1 p.m. championship game against the winner of the 11 a.m. elimination game between St. Mary's and Gustavus. If the Toms lose, they will play a 3 p.m. rematch for the playoff crown.
Emilly Gregory had a homer and single to drive in four runs in game one, and finished the day with three hits and five RBI. Erin Mussett homered in game one then had a bases-loaded double to cap a seven-run fourth inning in game two. She closed the day with five RBI.
Tisa Phinney had three hits on the day and extended her hitting streak to 17 games. Jenna Hoffman reached base six times with two walks and a 4-for-5 day. Kimmy Hassel had an RBI sac fly in game one and two hits in game two to reach 70 hits on the season. Mary Rentz went 4-for-5 on the day.
The Tommies broke to an 8-0 lead against St. Mary's then held off a four-run last-inning rally that put the tying and go-ahead runners on base. Bowe got a game-ending fly out to seal the victory. UST survived five errors in game one.
