Baseball offense erupts in sweep of first-place Mac

Second-place St. Thomas used 32 hits and 10 walks on the day to help sweep first-place Macalester, 7-5 and 16-6, in an MIAC baseball twinbill Wednesday on the Scots' diamond.
The Tommies (21-14 overall, 14-4 MIAC) ran their conference win streak to 10 and have won 17 of their last 21 games. They also secured an MIAC playoff spot for the 12th time in the 12-year history of the format.
UST also ended the Scots' 11-game win streak and handed starters Alex Ingram (6-1) and Eric Robinson (7-1) theirfirst defeats of 2011.
Macalester (22-11, 13-3) holds a one-game lead on UST and two-game lead on third-place Hamline. But the Scots have weekend road doubleheaders at St. John's and at Concordia-Moorhead. The Tommies close the MIAC season Sunday at home against St. Mary's.
Coach Chris Olean's Tommies are still alive to share or win the program's ninth consecutive MIAC championship. The Toms have outscored their last 10 conference opponents 75-23, all victories.
Brothers Dan and Nick Reichert combined to go 8-for-10 on the day with seven RBI and five runs. Dan Reichert and Tayler Rahm each had five hits; Tim Kahle and Drew Cremisino each had four hits.
Kris Edwards earned his sixth save in game one as he struck out six and got the last nine outs with no earned runs allowed. Bryce Gapinski worked the first four innings and posted his 17th career win. John Lichte earned his 12th career win as he worked one inning in rellief of starter Zach Franz.
