St. Mary's (M), May 08, 2011

Freshman catcher J.D. Dorgan went 5-for-7 with a walk on the day to lead thPlayer pice host Tommies to a doubleheader baseball sweep of St. Mary's, 11-4 and 8-5.

The Tommies (23-14 overall, 16-4 MIAC) have won 19 of their last 23 games and won their last 12 MIAC games after a 4-4 start. They clinched a share of the program's ninth consecutive conference title and wrapped up the top seed for next weekend's MIAC playoffs.

UST will share the championship with Macalester if the Scots sweep Concordia in their makeup games on Tuesday in Moorhead or otherwise take the crown solo.

The Toms used an eight-run sixth inning to break a 3-3 tie in the opener, and Bryce Gapinski won with a strong showing in relief. Drew Cremisino and Dorgan each stroked two-run homers.

Senior Nick Reichert hit his first collegiate home run in game two -- a first-inning grand slam. Senior Kris Edwards came on with two on and two out in the fourth inning and UST ahead just 5-3 and escaped that jam. Edwards allowed two runs in the seventh yet still recorded his seventh save.

Seniors J.B. Korte and Tim Kahle each went 3-for-5 on the day for the Tommies, who climbed to 12-0 at home this season.

Kahle is hitting .567 (17-for-30) in his current 10-game hitting streak.

In game one, Cremisino's two-run homer gave UST an early three-run lead, but a two-out error and a hit batsman preceded a three-run triple for the Cardinals inPlayer pic the top of the fourth inning.

The Tommies sent 13 batters to the plate in the bottom of the sixth inning in an eight-run eruption. Dorgan started the rally with a single, and later in the inning hit he added a two-run homer off the scoreboard.

Gapinski worked the last three innings for the mound victory -- the 18th of his career. He fanned five and allowed just one hit, a seventh-inning solo homer.

UST plays a single nine-inning game Tuesday at home vs. Northwestern. The Toms will start the conference playoffs next Friday with a game vs. fourth-sPlayer piceed St. John's.
