Ben Payne scored two goals and Kelly Andrew had 27 saves to lead third-seed Concordia to a 4-2 win over second-seed St. Thomas in Saturday night's MIAC semifinal men's hockey playoff game in Mendota Heights.
Andrew Kappers had a goal and an assist for the Tommies (14-10-2) in their season-ending loss. Kappers closed his career with 96 points.
The Cobbers (12-10-4) never trailed despite being outshot 21-7 in the first two periods and 29-18 on the game.
Payne's second goal, a wraparound with 9:02 left, broke a 1-1 tie. Brian Kang's breakaway goal with 9:02 left gave the Cobbers a 3-1 lead.
Chris Hickey scored with 3:08 remaining to pull UST within 3-2. St. Thomas pulled its goalie with 35 seconds left, but after a faceoff in the Cobber zone, a Tommie player fell down, allowing CC's Aaron Wheeler to cruised alone in for an empty-net tally with 25 seconds to go.
The Cobbers are 7-2-1 in their last 10 games. They advance to play top-seed Hamline in the playoff finals. That game is tentatively scheduled for Saturday March 5 at the Fairgrounds Coliseum.
