Freshmen Taylor Young and Maggie Weiers combined to score 21 points in a late 28-12 run that rallied St. Thomas (10-3 overall, 9-1 MIAC) to a 69-62 women's basketball win over Hamline (5-9, 4-7) in Monday's conference play at UST's Schoenecker Arena.
The Toms used a 32-4 advantage in bench points and outrebounded Hamline 45-31 as they bounced back from Saturday's five-point road loss at St. Catherine. UST won its fourth consecutive home game.
UST remained one-half game behind St. Ben's, a 12-point victor at St. Mary's.
Young scored 13 of her team-high 15 points in the final 6:30. Weiers added 13 points and eight rebounds, Sarah Smith had 12 points and 11 rebounds, and Jazmin Townsend added 12 points. UST made 22 of 29 at the foul line but converted just 1-of-9 from 3-point range.
The Pipers led 44-39 with 9:20 left before Young (13 points) and Weiers (10) helped UST built a late 10-point lead.
Hamline senior center Mary Wilkowski had 20 of her team's 29 points in the first half. She finished with 26 points and seven rebounds. Kara Poirier, Stephanie Robinson and Nikki Klinck each scored 10 points, while Robinson added five assists and five rebounds. Hamline had only 10 turnovers and made 15-of-19 at the foul line but sank just one of their first 13 3-point attempts.
St. Thomas is home Wednesday night to face Macalester.
