W, 2-1
at Bethel (W), September 26, 2009

Freshman Anna Strehlow's first collegiate goal lifted first-place St. Thomas (7-2 overall, 4-0 MIAC) to a 2-1 victory over previously-unbeaten Bethel (7-1-1, 1-1-1) in Saturday's conference women's soccer play in Arden Hills.

The Tommies ran their win streak to five and pushed their MIAC regular-season unbeaten streak to 16.

After Bethel scored in the 63rd minute to take a 1-0 lead, UST's Lexie Fisher and Strehlow scored the tying and go-ahead goals in a 5:03 span. Erin Sprangers assisted on the first goal, and Ale Wicka and Sloane Kuramoto assisted on Strehlow's goal.

Freshman Callan Faulkner was in goal all 90 minutes and had seven saves.

The Tommies are home Wednesday to face St. Ben's (4 p.m.).

Coach Weisz' Game Report

The Tommies overcame a determined Bethel team to win 2-1 today, improving their record to 4-0 in MIAC play -- tied with Concordia for first place.

The Royals started the game with tremendous energy and an outstanding work rate that saw the Tommies on the defensive for large portions of the first half. The Tommies came close to taking the lead with a couple chances for junior Lexie Fisher and freshman Brittany Cochlin. However, it was an equally busy time for freshman Tommie goalkeeper Callan Faulkner, who saved five shots in the first half. Despite the furious pace of the game, the teams went to the halftime break tied 0-0.

The second half saw the Tommies exert pressure deep in the Royals' half early on, however it was the Royals who struck first, when a Royal attacker split the Tommie defense and slipped the ball under the onrushing Faulkner for a 1-0 Bethel lead in the 63rd minute.

However, the lead would last a mere 13 minutes before the Tommies struck twice to take home full points. The first Tommie goal came courtesy of Fisher, who took a pass from senior captain Erin Sprangers, beat her defender to the endline, and floated a ball to the far post hooking it into the net, tying the game at one goal apiece.

Five minutes later, the Tommies took the lead for good through an unlikely sequence. The smallest Tommie, sophomore Sloane Kuramoto, flicked on a header in the Royal box to junior Ale Wicka, who touched it off to freshman Anna Strehlow for a finish from five yards out. It was Strehlow's first career goal as a Tommie.

The Tommies defending resolutely for the remaining 15 minutes, and held off pressure from the Royals to emerge victorious and one step closer to repeating as MIAC champions.

The Tommies play host to St. Ben's, Wednesday Sept 29th at 4 p.m.
