Lexie Fisher and Erin Sprangers scored goals to lead the St. Thomas women's soccer team to Wednesday's 3-1 victory over St. Catherine on the Wildcats' field in St. Paul.
UST also was credited with an own goal. The Tommies (5-0-2 overall, 2-0-1 MIAC) stayed unbeaten.
Fisher scored in the 14th minute, and an own goal in the 34th minute made it 2-0. CSC's Mikaelyn Llewellyn scored in the 40th minute to trim the lead to 2-1. Sprangers added an insurance goal in the 73rd minute.
With kickoff temperatures in the 80s, the game got off to a sluggish start and was a midfield battle until the Tommies got on the board in the 14th minute. Sprangers' toe poked the ball past the keeper and found herself just wide of the goal. She cut the ball back to the incoming Fisher, who hit a one-time, off -balance, left-footed shot into the low corner of the net for a 1-0 lead.
Following the goal, St. Catherine looked to tie, but it was the Tommies who would find the goal again. In the 34th minute, junior Alison True served in a dangerous corner to the far post. Under pressure from the Tommies, a CSC defender misplayed the ball into her own net for a 2-0 St. Thomas lead.
The lead did not last long, however, as St. Catherine pulled one back in the 40th minute. A wide midfielder severed a far post cross in and the CSC forward found space to head it into the goal, past sophomore goalkeeper Amanda Domeier.
According to coach Sheila McGill, the second half found the Tommies in control with exceptional leadership from senior captains Coutney Walior and Steph Paasch. After numerous dangerous attacks, the Tommies put the game beyond doubt when sophomore Ann Speltz played in a long cross, which Sprangers controlled and slotted home into the net. The Tommies comfortably played out the remaining 15 minutes for the two-goal win.
