Schnettler gets record but Toms fall

Senior guard Bryan Schnettler scored 32 points and broke the MIAC career 3-point record, but the No. 3-ranked St. Thomas men's basketball team had a seven-game winning streak halted as it lost 80-74 in overtime Wednesday night in St. Peter.
The Gusties (13-9 overall, 11-6) outscored the Toms 24-8 at the foul line and made nine of their first 10 free throws in overtime. Trevor Wittwer scored 23 points and Phil Sowden scored 16 points for the Gusties, who shot 56% from the field on the game.
The Tommies (20-3, 16-2), who played without injured point guard Andrew Dwyer, lost their first overtime game of the season after winning three others, all on the road. Isaac Rosefelt had 16 points and 13 rebounds, and Mike Keating chipped in 10 points and eight rebounds.
UST trailed 7-0 and 14-7 but used a big run to take a 10-point lead late in the first half. St. Thomas was up 37-33 at halftime but never led in the final 13 minutes of regulation.The Toms scored the last four points in regulation to tie the score 64-64, and survived a missed GAC shot at the buzzer.
But Gustavus scored the first five points of overtime and never trailed thereafter.
The Toms now share the MIAC lead with St. John's, a 13-point home winner over Augsburg. The Tommies play Concordia-Moorhead at home Saturday (1 p.m.), have a bye Feb. 14, then finish at home Feb. 17 against St. John's (3 p.m.). St. John's has a Saturday bye and a Feb. 14 home game vs. Hamline.
Schnettler, who came in with 275 career 3-pointers, made seven treys and now has 282 in 77 games at St. Thomas. He broke the conference all-game mark of 277 held by Macalester's Patrick Russell.
