Toms pull away in second half

Seniors Bryan Schnettler and Isaac Rosefelt each scored 22 points and the No. 3-ranked Tommies shot 55% from the field in Wednesday's 74-57 win over visiting Gustavus Adolphus in MIAC men's basketball play at UST's Schoenecker Arena.
Rosefelt added eight rebounds and three blocks for the Tommies (12-1 overall, 8-0 MIAC), who remain in a tie for the conference lead with St. John's (8-0), a 75-65 winner at Augsburg.
St. Thomas has won six in a row, all in a 13-day stretch, and has won 12 consecutive home games vs. MIAC foes since January 2006.
The Toms, who outrebounded Gustavus 37-26, improved to 33-1 over the last two seasons when it outshoots foes from the field. The Toms shot 63% in the second half (15-of-24) and 55% on the game (28-of-51).
The Gusties (6-6, 4-3), playing their fourth consecutive road game, had only six turnovers but shot just 37% from the field (19-of-52), including 3-of-21 from 3-point range. Trevor Wittwer had 19 points and Phil Sowden and Andrew Doble each scored eight points for GAC.
UST's junior Lonnie Robinson had eight points and three steals; senior Mike Keating had seven points, six rebounds and three assists; senior Dan Grant had a season-high seven points off the bench; and senior Andrew Dwyer had five assists and four rebounds.
Schnettler had his ninth 20-point game of the season for the Tommies. He made 4-of-7 from 3-point range and now has 238 treys in 67 games at UST -- fifth best in MIAC history behind Mac's Patrick Russell (277 threes), UST's Kip Sparby (250), Carleton's Jim Lovrein (239) and Augsburg's Kevin Van Rossum (239).
Gustavus' last lead was at 4-2, and it trailed 31-24 at halftime. The Gusties scored the first basket of the second half but never got closer than five the rest of the game.
St. Thomas closes the first half of the MIAC 20-game schedule with road games Saturday at Concordia-Moorhead and Jan. 17 at St. John's.
