St. Thomas used four interceptions and three sacks to help it reach a school victory milestone and post a 21-7 road victory at Gustavus in MIAC football play Saturday in St. Peter.

The Tommies (500-320-34 all-time) joined the Minnesota Gophers (625 wins in 123 seasons) and St. John's (531 in 96 seasons) among Minnesota institutions in the 500-victory club.

Tommie senior QB Ryan Jansen threw one TD pass, ran for a touchdown, rushed 13 times for 62 yards, and didn't have an interception as he improved his career record as a starter to 9-5. He directed an offense that converted 3-of-3 on fourth-down tries leading to a pair of TDs. Jansen completed 9-of-15 for 71 yards in the air on a day when UST rushed the ball 45 times. The Tommie offensive line allowed just one sack today after giving up 11 in UST's first two games.

Soph running back Jake Casey rushed for 92 yards on 21 carries, including a 44-yard scoring run on a 4th-and-1 situation late in the first half. Casey also had 25 yards on two receptions as he surpassed 100 yards of rushing/receiving yards for the third week in a row.

In the 75th meeting in the series, St. Thomas (2-1 overall, 1-0 MIAC) overcame a second-quarter injury to star wide receiver P.J. Theisen and built a 14-0 halftime lead. Theisen caught two passes for 16 yards before leaving for the day midway through the second quarter.

The Toms have won seven of their last 10 road games dating back to 2003 and topped the Gusties (1-1, 0-1) for the third year in a row. The contest was their final visit to Hollingsworth Field, which will be replaced by the time UST returns to St. Peter for football in 2008.

St. Thomas held the home team to 180 yards of total offense, including just 57 yards on 25 rushes. UST senior Mike Rouse had five solo tackles; freshman Ross Petterson and soph Justin Thom each had five tackles and one sack; Nick Shannon had a sack among his three solos; junior Matt Anderson picked off two passes in the final minutes; junior Pat Sommerstad and freshman Jeffrey Hilliard also had first-half interceptions.

St. Thomas has 14 interceptions in its last six games dating back to 2005.

St. Thomas has a bye week Sept. 23, then plays Sept. 30 at unbeaten Bethel.
