Concordia-Moorhead 20, St. Thomas 3 Senior fullback Ed Oehlers had TD runs of 1 and 23 yards and Concordia limited host St. Thomas to 14 rushing yards and 181 yards of offense in Saturday's 20-3 MIAC football victory over the Tommies in St. Paul. The first game on UST's new FieldTurf was dominated by the defenses as each team had five sacks. The Cobbers (2-0 overall, 1-0 MIAC) had just 205 yards of offense themselves but capitalized on four Tommie turnovers. Concordia junior DB Tanner Radermacher had two interceptions and recovered a fumbled punt return. St. Thomas (1-1, 0-1 MIAC) was held without a touchdown at home for the first time since a 17-0 shutout loss to St. John's in 2000. Freshman Adam Valenta kicked a 40-yard field goal in the second quarter, but came up just short on a 39-yard try just before halftime. Junior PK Brian Halverson kicked field goals of 36 and 24 yards and both PATs as the Cobbers beat UST for the third consecutive year. The Tommies had five sacks and held the Cobbers to 66 yards passing and just seven completions in 18 attempts. UST junior Andrew Ubbelohde had two sacks and 12 tackles; senior Dustin Peltier had 13 tackles; junior Ben Kessler had two sacks and eight tackles; and senior John Kaiser had seven tackles, three for loss, and a forced fumble. The Tommie defense had given up 473 yards in a 34-20 loss to Concordia last Nov. 8 in the 2003 season finale. The first Cobber TD was setup by senior Andrew Passanante's 32-yard punt return and his diving catch near the goal. After his punt return to the Cobber 47, Concordia went 53 yards in eight plays, as Passanante made a 22-yard reception on 3rd-and-5 to set up the Cobbers at the Tommie one. Oehlers scored on the first play. On the next possession, Radermacher's first interception, a 15 yard return and a five-yard penalty gave the Cobbers possession at the UST 36. Senior Shawn Reile's diving catch for 10 yards on 3rd-and 6 helped set up a 36-yard field goal for a 10-0 lead. Oehlers' 23-yard scoring run capped a 12-play, 78-yard scoring drive for a 17-3 lead midway through the third quarter. The Tommies' best scoring chance came in the fourth quarter, trailing 17-3, when a diving sophomore P.J. Theisen couldn't secure a potential TD pass in the end zone on a 4th-and-6 from the Cobber 27. Moments later, a Tommie fumbled punt on a fair-catch was covered at the UST10 by Cobber soph Ryan Emter. The Toms held the Cobbers to a 24-yard field goal that closed the scoring. UST senior punter Chris Husby kept the Toms close as he averaged 43.9 yards on seven punts. Junior Joel Korte caught five passes for 65 yards and Theisen had three catches for 66 yards. Oehlers rushed 12 times for 51 yards. Passanante had three catches for 33 yards and Reile had three catches for 31 yards. Cobber senior LB Josh Dietz had 11 tackles and junior DT Travis Almquist had 1.5 sacks. Next Saturday, St. Thomas is at Augsburg and Concordia opens its home season vs. Carleton. see box score here
