Katy Vandam is entering her second season as assistant coach of St. Thomas swimming & diving in 2023-24.
The Tommies path into NCAA Division I continued in 2022-23 as Vandam helped the men to break five program records and the women to break four. Joe Rudd earned All-Summit League honors after placing second in the 200 breaststroke with a school record. Rudd also broke the program records in the 100 breaststroke and 200 IM at the Summit League Championships, in which the men finished sixth. Grace Urkiel was a part of all four of the women’s records, including individual records in the 100 breaststroke, 200 breaststroke and 200 IM, while also swimming a leg of the 200 medley relay team. Also setting an individual record for the men was Blake Baertlein in the 100 IM while the men’s 200 medley relay also set the new Tommie standard. Both the men’s and women’s programs earned four selections to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team. Vandam helped guide both the men’s and women’s programs to CSCAA Scholar All-America honors.
Vandam, whom most recently served as the head coach of swimming & diving at Hamline University, arrived after one season as the head boy's swimming & diving coach at Minneapolis South/Washburn/Roosevelt High School. Prior to Minneapolis South/Washburn/Roosevelt, Vandam spent six seasons as the head boy's swimming & diving coach at Highland Park Senior High School from 2013-19. Highland Park broke 15 school, and two St. Paul City Conference records, over Vandam's tenure as head coach. She also coached an NISCA All-American at Highland Park. Simultaneously, Vandam spent four seasons as the Highland Park girl's swimming & diving coach, where she coached five school, and two St. Paul City Conference records.
She began her coaching career with summer programs in Albuquerque, N.M., before she transitioned to her first high school coaching position at Sandia Prep, where she led the boy's swimming & diving team to second place at the New Mexico Activities Association (NMAA) State Meet with just four qualifiers.
Vandam was inducted into the Minnesota Master's Swimming Hall of Fame in 2020.
