Garrett Solis begins his second season as assistant coach of the St. Thomas women's basketball team in 2023-24.
Solis' Tommies took a big step forward during the 2022-23 season, including a strong finish to the season that included the program’s first NCAA Division I postseason victory. St. Thomas recorded a 61-50 win over Western Illinois during the first round of the Summit League Championships which was part of five wins over the final seven games of the season. The Tommies recorded their first weekend sweep Jan. 12 and 14 against Kansas City and Oral Roberts, before completing the team’s first season series sweeps over UMKC and ORU to begin its strong finish to the regular season. St. Thomas capped its regular season with a double-digit comeback victory over North Dakota, 74-68, on senior day. Maggie Negaard completed her two-year career with the Tommies as an All-Summit League Second Team selection, finishing the season 15th in the country in 3-point percentage. The Tommies totaled four selections to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team in Negaard, Phoebe Frentzel, Jade Hill and Jordyn Lamker.
Solis comes to the Tommies after spending the past six seasons with the University of Minnesota women's basketball program, four seasons as assistant to head coach Lindsay Whalen and two as Assistant Director of Basketball Operations. He assisted in the day-to-day operations of the program, including managing the scout team and student managers. He also handled various administrative duties, acted as the liaison to the Fast Break Club and assisted the team's video coordinator.
In his first two years with Minnesota, Solis served as its administrative intern.
Solis earned a B.S. in social studies with a minor in history from Eastern Michigan. While at EMU, he served as assistant video coordinator for two years with the men's basketball team after three years as a student manager. In the past Solis also served as an intern with Hudl for two years and was an assistant coach with the varsity boys basketball at Lincoln Park High School.
Solis lives in Bloomington, Minn., with his wife Callie and their dog Greta.
