Matt Rachey is entering his sixth season as the head coach of the St. Thomas men's golf team in 2026-27.
In his first season at the helm of the men's golf program, Rachey helped the team to a pair of top-two finishes, including a victory against South Dakota in the Duel at Dacotah. In St. Thomas' inaugural appearance at the Summit League Championship, the Toms finished eighth.
The program took a massive leap forward in year two under the guidance of Rachey. The team won three tournaments including a first-place finish over 14 teams in the Big O Classic, a first-place finish over 10 teams at the TPC Deere Run Invitational, and a first-place finish over eight teams at the Stampede at the Creek. In their second appearance at the Summit League Championship in Lincoln, Neb. the Toms improved on their first-year finish, taking sixth place.
Rachey was named the Men’s Coach of the Year at the 2023 Tommie Choice Awards.
Year three was highlighted by a late-season surge that saw Matt Armstrong take second place in a stacked field at the Highland Meadows Intercollegiate and Owen Rexing take a program-best third place at the 2024 Summit League Championship. The Tommies also finished the highest they have every finished in a conference championship, fifth place.
The Tommies returned to competing for team tournament titles in their fourth year with podium finishes at the Tommie Invitational (2nd place) and SeattleU Redhawk Invitational (1st place). Matt Armstrong claimed the first individual tournament title in program history with a smashing performance at the Redhawk (69-71-66--206).
Under Coach Rachey, the Toms produced a pair of team podiums in year five with a second place finish at the Bluejay Invitational and a team title at the Shocker Invitational. They finished strong once again with top-six finishes in each of the final three competitions, including a sixth place result at the 2026 Summit League Championship. The best individual results came at the Rutherford Intercollegiate when both Owen Rexing and Mason Roloff tied for third place.
Rachey, the program’s first official head coach in St. Thomas’ NCAA Division I-era, spent two seasons as the assistant coach of men’s golf at Minnesota before joining the Tommies. Rachey assisted in the development and instruction of the team while leading two freshmen to All-Big Ten seasons. He also aided in the coaching of an All-American and a top 40 amateur in the world.
Prior to joining the Gophers, he served as an assistant golf professional at the Minnesota Valley Golf Club in Bloomington, Minn., after holding the same position at the Minneapolis Golf Club. In addition, he ran his own business providing golf instruction for students from Waconia, Minn., and the surrounding area. Rachey has also worked as an assistant golf professional at Tonto Verde Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz., and he was an associate teaching professional at Island View Golf Club in Waconia.
A four-year letter winner, Rachey played at Minnesota from 2013-17. He was a three-time All-Big Ten Academic honoree and twice was named the program’s “Louis Lick” Hardest Worker Award Winner. Rachey appeared in five tournaments as a freshman for a team that would go on to win the Big Ten championship. His best finish came when he tied for sixth at the Barnabas Health Intercollegiate. The next year, he played in a career-high six tournaments for the Gophers. In his junior season, Rachey had a career-best finish when he claimed second at the St. John’s Invitational. He posted three consecutive rounds under par, including a career-low 68, to finish at 6-under-par with a 208. Overall, he played in 16 tournaments during his career, including two during his senior campaign. He finished with a career scoring average of 75.73 with three rounds under par and two top-10 finishes.
A native of Waconia, Minn., Rachey graduated in 2017 from Minnesota’s Carlson School of Management with a double-major in management information systems and finance.
