Matt Rachey is entering his third season as the head coach of the St. Thomas men's golf team in 2023-24.

In his first season at the helm of the men's golf program, Rachey helped the team to a pair of top-two finishes, including a victory against South Dakota in the Duel at Dacotah. In St. Thomas' inaugural appearance at the Summit League Championship, the Toms finished eighth.
 
The program took a massive leap forward in year two under the guidance of Rachey. The team won three tournaments including a first-place finish over 14 teams in the Big O Classic, a first-place finish over 10 teams at the TPC Deere Run Invitational, and a first-place finish over eight teams at the Stampede at the Creek. In their second appearance at the Summit League Championship in Lincoln, Neb. the Toms improved on their first-year finish, taking sixth place.
 
Rachey was named the Men’s Coach of the Year at the 2023 Tommie Choice Awards. 

Rachey, the program’s first official head coach in St. Thomas’ NCAA Division I-era, spent two seasons as the assistant coach of men’s golf at Minnesota before joining the TommiesRachey assisted in the development and instruction of the team while leading two freshmen to All-Big Ten seasons. He also aided in the coaching of an All-American and a top 40 amateur in the world.

Prior to joining the Gophers, he served as an assistant golf professional at the Minnesota Valley Golf Club in Bloomington, Minn., after holding the same position at the Minneapolis Golf Club. In addition, he ran his own business providing golf instruction for students from Waconia, Minn., and the surrounding area. Rachey has also worked as an assistant golf professional at Tonto Verde Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz., and he was an associate teaching professional at Island View Golf Club in Waconia.

A four-year letter winner, Rachey played at Minnesota from 2013-17. He was a three-time All-Big Ten Academic honoree and twice was named the program’s “Louis Lick” Hardest Worker Award Winner.  Rachey appeared in five tournaments as a freshman for a team that would go on to win the Big Ten championship. His best finish came when he tied for sixth at the Barnabas Health Intercollegiate. The next year, he played in a career-high six tournaments for the Gophers. In his junior season, Rachey had a career-best finish when he claimed second at the St. John’s Invitational. He posted three consecutive rounds under par, including a career-low 68, to finish at 6-under-par with a 208. Overall, he played in 16 tournaments during his career, including two during his senior campaign. He finished with a career scoring average of 75.73 with three rounds under par and two top-10 finishes.

A native of Waconia, Minn., Rachey graduated in 2017 from Minnesota’s Carlson School of Management with a double-major in management information systems and finance.
