- Title:
- Pitching Coach
Jake Matthys is entering his first season as Pitching Coach for the Tommies. Born and raised in Spring Lake Park, Minn., Jake is a 2012 graduate of Spring Lake Park High. Jake was a four-year letter winner at SLP, and earned a Division I scholarship offer to Kansas State University.
In his freshman campaign at K-State, Jake won the closer’s job out of the gate, helping K-State win the Big XII regular-season championship for the first time in school history. Matthys made two appearances in the Super Regional against Oregon State, including his first career collegiate start and a relief appearance in which he threw two scoreless innings while earning the win in game one of the series. Jake ended the season with a 9-2 record, 2.05 ERA in 60.1 IP, and nine saves. Matthys was selected Big XII Freshman of the Year, first-team All-Big XII, and first-team Freshman All-American.
After his impressive debut college season, Matthys encountered an elbow injury during the summer and ultimately transferred to Division II Southwest Minnesota State University to be closer to home and his family. Following an underwhelming season at SMSU, Matthys found his stride again in the Northwoods League in the summer of 2015. After transferring to D-II Angelo State, Matthys pitched for the Wareham Gatemen in the prestigious Cape Cod Collegiate summer league in 2016 ending the summer with a 3.77 ERA in 31 IP with 25 Ks and 7 saves (2nd in the league). Matthys finished his senior season at Angelo State with a record of 8-4 and a 5.22 ERA in 60.1 IP.
After his collegiate career, Matthys has pitched professionally in the American Association each of the last three seasons with the Gary Southshore Railcats, St. Paul Saints, and the Milwaukee Milkmen.
Outside of his playing career he has been a coach and instructor for the Minnesota Blizzard Baseball Club during parts of the last five seasons. Jake’s unmatched passion for the game and his knowledge of pitching will help the Tommie pitching staff greatly in 2020.
