Fischer and Porthan tally first collegiate goals
ST. PAUL, Minn. — The University of St. Thomas defeated New Hampshire 7-2 on Friday. The Tommies scored twice in the first period and three times in the second to take a 5-0 lead through 40 minutes.
The Tommies generated early looks before Whitney Horton scored at 16:30, finishing an even-strength chance assisted by Chloe Boreen and Cara Sajevic for a 1-0 lead. New Hampshire put pressure on Dani Strom through the middle of the first period, but Strom stopped shots from Sydney Leonard, Courtney Lilley and Aurora Kahlert while Josie Skoogman blocked another Leonard attempt. The Tommies added to the lead at 3:18 when Kenleigh Fischer scored off assists from JuliAnna Gazdik and Maddie Brown, and Strom later turned away Nina Rossi to help the Tommies take a 2-0 lead into the first intermission. Fischer's goal marked the first time she scored this season.
The Tommies generated the early pressure in the second period, including a Boreen shot off the pipe at 17:10. Boreen scored unassisted at 8:12 to give the Tommies a 3-0 lead, and Sajevic added an even-strength goal from Jenessa Gazdik at 7:29 to make it 4-0. New Hampshire changed goaltenders to Noemi Martinez at 7:16 and created several looks afterward, but Strom handled the shots that reached the net while the Tommies blocked others. Horton scored at 4:00 off assists from Cailin Mumm and Fischer, pushing the lead to 5-0, and the score held there through the end of the period. This assist was one of two recorded by Fischer for the first time this season.
Strom turned away several New Hampshire looks in the opening minutes of the third period, and the Tommies added to their lead at 12:13 when Taylor Porthan scored at even strength off assists from Ellie Stewart and Sajevic to make it 6-0. It was Porthan's first goal of the season. New Hampshire got on the board at 6:43 on Aurora Kahlert's even-strength goal, assisted by Nina Rossi and Danika Botterill, but Nora Sauer scored for the Tommies at 5:18 with assists from Fischer and Teagan Kulenkamp to move the score to 7-1. Courtney Lilley added a New Hampshire goal at 1:46, and the Tommies generated the final late chances through Maya Engler, Kulenkamp and Porthan before closing out a 7-2 win.
