Women’s golf wins second consecutive tournament to begin season

Kathryn VanArragon beats 78-golfer field by four strokes
NORMAL, Ill. – St. Thomas women's golf had not won a tournament in nearly two years. After another strong performance Tuesday at the Redbird Invitational, the Tommies have now won two events in the last seven days. St. Thomas topped a 13-team field that included a pair of Summit League schools, South Dakota and South Dakota State, winning by two strokes on the strength of a tournament-best 283 (-5) to open the competition.
Kathryn VanArragon followed up her third career individual title with an even more impressive three days in Normal. VanArragon matched her single-round personal best with a 68 (-4) in the second round and finished the tournament four strokes clear of the field as the only golfer to finish under par. She led the Tommies to victory, posting the team's low score in both of the final two rounds.
St. Thomas' next-best finisher was freshman Ruby Reding, who turned in the tournament of her young career, tying for fifth place. Reding matched VanArragon's best score of the week, leading St. Thomas with a first-round 68 (-4) that included seven birdies. The freshman scored for the Tommies in all three rounds and carded the team's second-lowest score on the final day 74 (+4).
Genevieve Birkeland made her season debut with a personal-best 15th-place finish, highlighted by a strong opening round of 70 (-2), also a personal record. After a difficult second round, she rallied with a 75 (+3) on the final day to help secure the team title.
Amelia Morton continued her strong start to the season with a top 20 finish, posting a 74 (+2) in the second round that was bested only by VanArragon among Tommie scorers. Nicole Reineke tied for 35th place and peaked with a 75 (+3) on the final day. Freshman Alyssa Raghuveer, competing as an individual, recorded a single-round personal best of 77 and a three-round score of 235.
