St. Thomas continues homestand, hosts Southern Utah

ST. PAUL, MINN. – The University of St. Thomas football team will host Southern Utah University in its second of three consecutive home games at O'Shaughnessy Stadium this Saturday, September 19, 2026. The Tommies and Thunderbirds will kick off at 1:00 p.m. in St. Paul, Minnesota. This match up marks the second meeting between the two teams since St. Thomas transitioned to Division I. In their first encounter in 2022, the Thunderbirds emerged victorious with a 44-13 win over the Tommies.
GAMEDAY CENTRAL
TICKETS: Tickets for Saturday's contest can be purchased on tommiesports.com/tickets. Students can also claim their tickets here. Fans will need to download tickets to their digital wallets in advance, and gates will open one hour prior to kickoff.
GIVEAWAY: Tickets for the game can be secured at www.tommiesports.com/tickets. In an exciting promotion, St. Thomas Athletics will distribute Tommie water bottles to the first 500 students who attend the game on Saturday afternoon.

TV/STREAMING: The game will be broadcast on Midco Sports Plus with commentary by Sam Ekstrom and Joe Moline.

LAST TIME OUT:
ST. THOMAS: St. Thomas dominated in a 56-14 win over Northern Michigan, putting together its first 50+ point performance of 2026. While the offense was the star of the show, the Tommie defense also dominated, forcing four Wildcat turnovers. It marked the tenth 4+ turnover performance in the DI era for St. Thomas' defense, and the sixth in the last three seasons.
SOUTHERN UTAH: The Thunderbirds fell to 1-2 this season, suffering a 58-24 loss at the hands of Colorado State, the alma matter of St. Thomas' own Corbu Stathes. Southern Utah fell behind 14-0 in the first quarter but cut the Rams lead to 31-21 with 4:21 to play in the second. However, Colorado State 24 unanswered points to end the first half to secure the 58-24 victory.
KEY STORYLINES:
IN THE NICK OF TIME: Nick Peipert garnered a lot of attention this past weekend, as he was named the PFL Offensive Player of the Week and Freshman of the Week for his performance against Northern Michigan. In his collegiate debut, Peipert passed for 270 yards and two touchdowns, becoming the first Tommie to record over 200 passing yards in a first collegiate start since 2021.
IT'S BEEN 84 YEARS: Ok, it's really only been four, but still. Fifth year senior Gabe Abel was the only current St. Thomas student-athlete to appear in the 2022 game between the Tommies and Thunderbirds, gaining two rush yards on two attempts. Eight other current players were on the roster, including Amari Powell, Rod Finley, Den Juette, Mitchell Schares, Charlie Boucher, Evan Tyler, James Morrison and Patrick Wagner.
