Carby and Lienhard combined for gaudy numbers against the Bison
FARGO, N.D. – St. Thomas softball (27-13, 9-4 Summit League) took both games of its Summit League doubleheader against North Dakota State (20-20, 4-5) on Wednesday afternoon at Tharaldson Park.
Game One
Two-out hitting powered the Purple in game one, as six of their 10 runs came with two outs. The scoring started early in the top of the first inning when Cassidy Carby launched her ninth home run of the season, bringing home Laken Lienhard and giving Ava Kleinfeldt a quick two-run cushion.
Kleinfeldt delivered a strong performance in the circle, allowing just two runs in a complete-game victory. The sophomore scattered six hits and three walks while striking out one. She induced 12 groundouts including four back to her in the circle.
St. Thomas added four more runs in the third inning. Carby doubled her RBI total with a single down the right field line to score Miley Wichman and Avery Wukawitz, and Zoe Trotter followed with a ground ball through the infield to plate Ella Cook and Carby.
North Dakota State picked up a run in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI groundout, but the Tommies continued to build their lead. Lienhard connected on her 11th home run of the season in the sixth, scoring Morgan Klein, and Klein later added two insurance runs in the seventh with a hit that brough home Trotter and Kyllie Weingart.
The Bison pushed across one more run in the seventh, but Kleinfeldt shut down any further threat to secure the win.
Game Two
The Tommies jumped out to another early lead but could not hold it through the first inning. Avery Wukawitz led off with a single and later scored on a Laken Lienhard double. Abbi Stierlen followed with a walk, and Cassidy Carby loaded the bases with a single, but St. Thomas left all three runners stranded. North Dakota State capitalized in the bottom, pushing across two runs.
Lienhard stayed hot in the second inning, driving in the tying run as Grace Nosan, who singled in her first at-bat of the series, came around to score. Ella Cook followed with a clean inning in the circle.
Carby sparked the offense again in the third, blasting her second home run of the doubleheader and 10th of the season to lead off the frame. Zoe Trotter extended the lead with an RBI double to score Miley Wichman.
After Cook worked a scoreless third, Carby added another RBI with a single in the fourth to bring home Wukawitz. However, for the second time in the game, the Tommies left the bases loaded after scoring just one.
St. Thomas created more separation in the fifth inning. Lienhard narrowly missed a home run but still drove in Morgan Klein, Stierlen followed with an RBI double to score Wukawitz, and Cook helped her own cause with an RBI single that plated Lienhard. The Bison answered with one run in the bottom of the fifth.
Cook finished off her complete game victory with two scoreless frames in the sixth and seventh.
