St. Thomas opens Summit League schedule with win behind Cook’s complete game

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A pair of three-RBI days by Laken Lienhard and Zoe Trotter powered St. Thomas softball to an 8-2 win during its Summit League opener at Kansas City on Friday afternoon. Ella Cook threw her fifth complete game of the season for the Tommies (19-7, 1-0 Summit League) along with five strikeouts and one earned run.

Ella Cook got the start in the circle and worked efficiently early, facing the minimum through three innings despite Kansas City putting runners on in both the first and third. A first-inning double play and a strong throw down by Kameron Monson in the third helped erase traffic and keep the Roos off the board.

After stranding runners in the first and third, the Tommie offense broke through in the fourth inning. Cassidy Carby led off with a solo home run, her seventh of the season, before a walk and an error put two more runners aboard. Zoe Trotter capitalized with a two-RBI single to center field to extend the lead to 3-0. Another walk put two runners on for Laken Lienhard, who delivered with a three-run home run to left-center, also her seventh of the season, pushing the advantage to 6-0.

Kansas City answered in the bottom of the fourth, stringing together two singles, a walk and taking advantage of a Tommie error to plate two runs and cut the deficit to 6-2.

The Tommies added insurance in the sixth as Abbi Stierlen reached on a one-out single. Pinch runner Gracie Konkol stole second and came around to score on a fielding error to extend the lead to 7-2.

St. Thomas tacked on one more in the seventh when Morgan Klein opened the inning with a triple. Trotter followed with a sacrifice fly to bring her home and make it 8-2. Cook closed the door in the bottom half, inducing two groundouts and recording her fifth strikeout of the game to secure the win.
