DENVER, COLO. – Call 'em the closers. The University of St. Thomas women's basketball team used a strong fourth quarter to upend the Denver Pioneers Saturday afternoon at Hamilton Gymnasium. Fueled by strong performances from their top scorers, the Tommies downed the Pioneers 60-56, improving to 11-13 overall and 4-6 in Summit League play.
QUICK HITS:
First Quarter: St. Thomas set the tone early, opening the game on a 10-2 run over the first four minutes. Autumn McCall (Blaine, Minn. / Centennial) and Hauge each finished at the rim during the spurt, while Faith Feuerbach (Sycamore, Ill. / Sycamore) knocked down an early three to force a Denver timeout. The Tommies' defensive pressure limited Denver to just 3-of-13 shooting in the quarter, and St. Thomas carried a 14-6 lead into the second.
Second Quarter: Denver responded with increased tempo and second-chance points, using a 7-0 run midway through the period to cut into the Tommie lead. Hood answered with a pair of three-pointers to steady the offense, and Hauge added points at the free throw line late. Despite the push from the Pioneers, St. Thomas held a slim 23-22 advantage at halftime.
Third Quarter: The third quarter featured multiple lead changes as Denver found its rhythm offensively. The Pioneers went on a decisive 10-2 run late in the period, fueled by transition baskets and offensive rebounds, to build their largest lead of the game. Hood and Mikayla Werner (Hortonville, Wis. / Hortonville) scored inside to keep St. Thomas within reach, but Denver outscored the Tommies 25-18 in the quarter to take a 47-41 lead into the final 10 minutes.
Fourth Quarter: St. Thomas flipped the script in the final quarter, opening on an 8-2 run to erase the deficit. Sand scored five straight points, including a go-ahead three, while Abbey Vallance (Sydney, Australia / Tara Anglican School) drilled a clutch triple to tie the game midway through the period. The Tommies closed on a 10-0 run over the final four minutes, converting at the free throw line and forcing key turnovers to seal the 60-56 victory.
